Munus Shih (he/they) is a Taiwanese Hakka creative coder and designer in Brooklyn, NY. (Lenapehoking) Currently as an Assistant Professor of Critical Technology at Pratt Institute, their work moves across code, design, and community-building, with a focus on exploring identity, decoloniality, and solidarity through digital tool-making.
Munus operates Free99, a creative coding practice designing and developing experiences that transcend the web. They are also a co-founder of Co-Assembly, a Taiwanese co-op investigating the collective power of humanizing data through research, experimentation and organizing. Previously, Munus has worked at Athletics and Design Systems International for clients including the New Museum, AIGA, Samsung, Amazon, NYU and the New York Review of Books.
Co-creator of the beginner-friendly JavaScript library p5.zine, Munus’s work has been recognized by the Processing Foundation Fellowship, New INC x New Museum DEMO Festival, Open Sources Arts Contributor Conference and the Taiwanese Hakka Affairs Council. In 2023, they co-organized Processing Community Day Taiwan, amplifying queer, femme and local voices across global creative tech networks.
Munus has taught courses in critical computation, interaction design, and product design at The New School and Cooper Union and given talks and workshops at NYU ITP, SVA, the Creative Coding Festival, Type Electives, Google DevFest, and Type@Cooper. They hold an M.F.A. in Design and Technology from Parsons School of Design.
